Homemade Tomato Sauce for Cozy Holidays

This homemade tomato sauce is easy to make with crushed tomatoes, sautéed aromatics, and fresh herbs, perfect for enhancing any dish.

  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes San Marzano tomatoes work perfectly for their sweetness.
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil A high-quality extra virgin olive oil is recommended for robust flavor.
  • 1 medium onion, diced A sweet onion adds depth of flavor.
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced Vital for that inviting aroma.
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano Mexican oregano adds a unique twist.
  • 1 tsp. sugar Balances the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • salt and pepper to taste Always season to your preference!

Method
 

  1. In a large saucepot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until it's translucent and fragrant.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Be careful not to let it burn.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and sprinkle in the dried oregano and sugar. Stir everything together and let the sauce come to a gentle simmer.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow it to simmer for at least 30 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. If you’re using fresh basil, add it just before serving. Blend for a smooth texture or leave it chunky.

Notes

This recipe can be frozen beautifully. Prepare a double batch and freeze half for quick dinners later!
